Non-Resident Fee Remission

Indiana University Policy on Non-resident Fee Remission Policy

Indiana University- Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) values the sacrifice put forth by our vast population of student veterans and we continue to do all that we can to aid them in pursuing a higher education.

As part of these efforts, out of state tuition fees are remitted for active duty students stationed in Indiana. Although a student is not classified as an Indiana resident, the fee remission grants them in-state tuition rates. Our institutional policy is as follows:

For members of the US military who are stationed in Indiana on a permanent change of station (PCS orders) and their dependents, the university provides a remission of the non-resident fee assessments. The military member is not classified as a resident but the university provides a remission on non-resident fees.

IUPUI is also an advocate and stays in compliance with the Higher Education Opportunity Act (PL 110-315) of 2008, which states:

SEC. 135. IN-STATE TUITION RATES FOR MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES ON ACTIVE DUTY, SPOUSES, AND DEPENDENT CHILDREN.
(a) Requirement- In the case of a member of the armed forces who is on active duty for a period of more than 30 days and whose domicile or permanent duty station is in a State that receives assistance under this Act, such State shall not charge such member (or the spouse or dependent child of such member) tuition for attendance at a public institution of higher education in the State at a rate that is greater than the rate charged for residents of the State.

In order to have the non-resident fee remitted the service member must provide a copy of their orders and a photo I.D. to the Office for Veterans and Military Personnel (OVMP) who will in turn forward this information to the Office of the Registrar and the Office of Student Account Services. The Office of Student Account Services is the office that applies the fee remission.
